Artists Statement of Jack Perry
I grew up in Walla Walla in the SE corner of Washington State. I started working on farms at the age of 13 and continued thru my time at Washington State University. It was hard work and long days, late into the evenings. I started to get a real sense of the earth while working on The Palouse area near Pullman Washington. The long ago settled farms, old outbuildings and grain elevators telling stories of the past. The Columbia and Snake Rivers dancing, winding, carving its route thru The Palouse. The long-rugged hillsides, rim rock reaching up to the windy clouds, reflecting in the rivers. The fertile rolling hills where places like Palouse Falls, Union Gap, Union Flats, Steptoe Butte, Colfax, Albion and Washtucna reside. These places all have been the subjects of my drawings, paintings and sculptures, forming the body and framework of my Art. I incorporate the relationship between the naturally occurring and man-made agricultural lines on the earth in my Art. The 46’N Latitude and 117’ W Longitude are lines that serve to orientate my artistic point of view. With my orientation point, I become focused on the essence, spirit and my relationship with the land.
